Cooling and Distribution Solutions: Eutectic plates

Eutectic plates, also known as eutectic cold plates or phase change plates, are devices used for thermal management in various applications. These plates utilize the principle of eutectic alloys to absorb and dissipate heat efficiently.

Eutectic alloys are special mixtures of metals or materials that have a lower melting point than any of their individual components. When such alloys solidify or melt, they do so at a constant temperature, known as the eutectic temperature. This property allows eutectic alloys to undergo phase changes with minimal temperature fluctuations.

Eutectic plates consist of a container or heat exchanger filled with a eutectic alloy. The plate is designed to absorb heat from a heat source, such as electronic components or machinery, during a cooling phase. The heat causes the eutectic alloy within the plate to melt and absorb the thermal energy. As the eutectic alloy absorbs heat, it undergoes a phase change from solid to liquid.

During the cooling phase, the eutectic plate can be placed in a refrigerated environment or exposed to ambient air. The eutectic alloy gradually releases the stored thermal energy, known as latent heat, into the surroundings. This process cools down the plate, and consequently, the heat source connected to it.

The name “eutectic” comes from the Greek words “eu” meaning “good” or “well” and “tēktos” meaning “melted” or “fused.” The term was coined to describe alloys that have an optimal melting point or temperature for efficient heat transfer. Eutectic alloys have found extensive use in various cooling applications, including eutectic plates, due to their desirable thermal properties.
