There are few people I trust instinctively when it comes to words. Christa Berger is one of them. She owns Korrekturdienst, her language and editing company for German-speaking audiences, one of the sharpest, clearest, most exacting firms I have ever encountered. But it is not just the technical brilliance that makes her work remarkable. It is her ability to hold meaning. She does not just correct errors. She listens to tone, hears subtext, and protects the soul of the message.

Christa is Styrian by birth, having grown up in the Wechsel mountains. This makes her Styrian in spirit as well, sharp-witted, warm-hearted, and full of insight. She holds a degree in radiologic technology, which means she received formal training in muscle structure, tissue, and blood. These insights became invaluable when we began working together on the science of meat curing. But more than that, she brings ancient memory and soul to her modern knowledge base and understanding of communication.

Should AI Handle Our Communication

I once asked Christa a question many are asking in this AI age. If a client has to communicate something important, such as a brand message or dissertation, should they write it in English and let AI handle the German? Her answer came without hesitation. No. Absolutely not.

She explained what I have experienced myself in the field of food science. AI makes subtle but crucial mistakes. It often misreads the essence of a thought, then mistranslates it entirely. By the time I am done correcting the AI-generated version, she said, I could have just written it properly myself, and it would have been right from the start.

Her view resonates powerfully with what I see every day. AI is brilliant, yes. I use it constantly. But left to itself, especially in specialised areas like meat processing or original research, it has never once produced a result I could trust and publish without major revision. The technology is useful, but only when handled by someone who knows what not to trust.
