A love so vast that words falter, a union written in symbols, passion, and eternity.
Some wines go beyond vineyards and cellars. They become vessels of memory, symbols of love, and tributes to the people who shape them. The Oudeskip Mourvèdre Reserve 2023 is one such wine. It is bold, rare, and deeply personal.
Jan and the Grapes
Behind the wine stands Jan van der Merwe, a winemaker with courage. Where others see Mourvèdre as a supporting act in blends, Jan saw its potential to stand on its own. He chose to give the grape a voice by sourcing fruit from Wellington in the Western Cape, where the late-ripening variety can reach its fullness.
Mourvèdre is not an easy grape. It demands heat, patience, and skill. When handled with care, it yields wines of great colour, strong spice, earthy intensity, and firm structure. Jan’s decision to bottle it solo reflects both his trust in the land and his belief that what is often overlooked can become extraordinary.
The Landscape and Climate of Wellington
Wellington lies just 45 minutes northeast of Cape Town, cradled at the foot of the Groenberg Mountains and framed by the Limietberg and Hawequa ranges. The town is surrounded by rolling valleys and fertile river plains, with vineyards climbing gentle slopes that catch long hours of sunlight. The Klein Berg River winds through the valley, supplying both water and cooling influence to the vines.
The climate here is warm Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers tempered by afternoon breezes that drift in from False Bay. These breezes are essential, preventing the grapes from overheating and allowing them to ripen slowly and evenly. Winters are cool and wet, replenishing the soils and ensuring healthy growth for the next season.
The soils vary from decomposed granite on the slopes to sandy alluvial deposits in the valley floor. Granite-derived soils provide structure and minerality, while the deeper sandy soils yield riper, fruit-forward expressions. For Mourvèdre, which thrives in warmth and struggles in cooler zones, Wellington offers the perfect balance. The long sunshine hours give it richness of colour and spice, while the cooling breezes and shifts between day and night preserve acidity and freshness. This marriage of heat and temperance allows Jan to capture the grape’s full personality without losing elegance.
Elmar and Juanita’s Creation
This same vision of recognising the magical guided Elmar, Eben’s brother, and Juanita, his sister-in-law, as they prepared for Kristi and Eben’s wedding. Their planning began at least four months before the day, and they poured themselves into it with the same passion that defines true craftsmanship.
It was their idea to pair this very unique wine with the couple. Just as Jan saw something special in Mourvèdre, they saw something special in Kristi and Eben and brought the two together. The result was more than a bottle on a table. It was a statement that love, like wine, is at its best when it dares to be bold.
The Unique Label
To make it personal, Juanita created a one-of-a-kind label, drawn from a photograph Eben had taken when he and Kristi became engaged. This turned the wine into a symbol not just of celebration but of their story. From the “Welcome to Our Love Story” sign at the wedding to the bottle etched with their likeness, everything spoke of intention, detail, and devotion.
A Symbol of Kristi and Eben
This wine became more than Mourvèdre. It became Kristi and Eben’s wine. It carried the richness of their journey together, the vibrancy of their bond, and the courage to embrace what is unique and make it unforgettable.
It reflects the passion of Elmar and Juanita, who, as a family, brought wine and love together in a creation that will always stand as a reminder of that day.
The Wine in the Glass
Oudeskip Mourvèdre Reserve 2023 pours a deep ruby with purple edges. On the nose, it shows dark berries, black plum, and dried herbs with hints of pepper, leather, and spice. The palate is full-bodied, with ripe fruit framed by firm tannins and earthy undertones. There is both richness and freshness, a balance that carries through to a long, lingering finish. It is a wine that rewards slow enjoyment and has the structure to age gracefully.
Love Beyond Words

And yet, the wine is only part of the story. The bond between Kristi and Eben cannot be measured in colour, spice, or finish. Their love is passionate and magical, so far beyond words that it can only be expressed in symbols, gestures, and the overwhelming tide of feeling. They did not simply come together as a couple. Their union was a fusing of worlds. It is cosmic in magnitude, biblical in impact, magical in reality, and utterly unlike anything most people will ever encounter.
This is why the wine matters. It is not just Mourvèdre. It is not just a label. It is not just a gift. It is the vessel of something extraordinary, the reflection of a love that is eternal, fearless, and larger than life.
A grape is often left in the background. A winemaker who believed in its strength. A couple whose love deserved something rare. A brother and his wife saw the magic to pair them all together. The Oudeskip Mourvèdre Reserve 2023 is more than a bottle of wine. It is the living symbol of Kristi and Eben’s love story.
A Toast

To Jan’s courage, to Elmar and Juanita’s devotion, and to Kristi and Eben’s love that is cosmic in scope and magical in reality. May every glass poured remind us that some unions are so vast they can only be celebrated in wine, passion, and eternity.
