The Adventures of Sigi and Armi

By Eben van Tonder, 26 Feb 2025

Origins and Purpose

In the 1910s, they were just humble mushrooms, quietly absorbing the whispers of ancient Austrian traditions, the tales of hunters and foragers, and the secrets of the mycelial networks beneath their feet. But when Christa plucked them on a full-moon night, high on a hill overlooking the Graz valley, their destiny changed. With her touch, she infused them with the spirit of curiosity, granting them voices, personalities, and an insatiable desire to see the world beyond their forest.

Sigi, the energy bunny, is always ready for an adventure, bouncing with excitement at every new discovery. He is fascinated by the alchemy of meat curing, the sizzling of sausages, and the mysteries of salt and smoke. Armi, on the other hand, is the strategist—calculating, patient, and always analyzing how their journey fits into a larger historical tapestry. He sees meat and mushrooms not just as food but as carriers of ancient knowledge.

The Journey to Africa

When Eben embarked on his journey to Africa, Christa entrusted Sigi and Armi to him, knowing they would remind him of the enchanted forests of Austria. They traveled with him, tucked safely in his bag, whispering about the grand adventures to come. Whether in Nigeria, navigating the bustling markets and learning about anolyte-treated meats, or in South Africa, where Burenwurst and biltong carried echoes of European curing traditions, they soaked it all in.

How They Communicate

Sigi and Armi still stay connected to Christa, sending their messages through the wind, carried by the spores of their fungal kin. Sometimes, she hears their voices in the rustling leaves of the trees in Graz, or in the way the mist moves over the hills at dawn. They whisper their excitement about the things they learn—how meat and mushrooms can be fused in hybrids, how fermentation can transform textures, and how ancient traditions are still alive in modern hands.

Their Role in the Meat & Mushroom Story

These two tiny yet wise fungi are more than just mascots of adventure—they are symbols of the synergy between the past and the future, the forest and the butcher’s shop, the mysticism of the natural world and the science of food. Wherever Eben and Christa go, Sigi and Armi follow, gleefully documenting their discoveries and whispering to their fungal brethren across the world.

Their story continues, always searching for the next grand mystery—be it in a medieval monastery’s curing room, a Nigerian slaughterhouse, or a new culinary innovation that fuses the best of both worlds.
